Hello, Wayne

We just figured out that we have traveled about 13,000 nautical miles in the last two years. We've sailed to the Bahamas and Bermuda, crossed to the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries and come back to explore the more northerly part of the Caribbean before sailing from Miami to our present port, Halifax NS. We've sailed through stormy weather and drifted along in little wind, and our Rolly Tasker sails have performed well for us in both, and everything in between. We were quite sure they would after we bought our main the year before we left and discovered it gave us an amazing improvement in our ability to point! Racing round the buoys became even more fun.

Among the things we really appreciate is the way the sails have been reinforced at key points and lots of chafe protection applied. Maintenance so far has consisted of re stitching some rubbed areas and applying a few patches to maintain the chafe protection, plus putting a couple of patches over areas that chafed when we had the mainsail tied off while fixing our boom at sea. The try-sail we bought from you found a new use - it became our main and kept us moving while we were making those repairs.

Needless to say we are very pleased, and really appreciate the toughness of the Rolly Tasker cruising sails. As well as your help in deciding what would work best, and the time you took to come to our boat with the sails. Needless to say we plan to buy our next set of sails from you when the time finally comes.

Thank you, and all the best,

Richard and Margaret Mair

Hi, Wayne

Just a quick note to bring you up to date on the 3 new sails I ordered for my Dickerson 36 ketch. I love them!! It's that simple.
I am extremely impressed with the fit (they fit perfectly!!) and finish of the sails. All the details we discussed are incorporated into the sails.
The smaller mainsail headboard allows Max hoist without the sail hitting the backstay! The sails look good on the boat & are wonderfully adjustable.
The full complement of telltales & draft stripes are a pleasant addition & make setting the sails easy and less of the guessing game my old sails presented.
The boat sails flatter, & is faster under every point of sail. What's not to like??
The level of materials & workmanship is first class!!
As for the loose foot design used on the Mainsail & Mizzen. I find that it is easier to put the sails on for the season, and they are much more adjustable.
I actually "trim" the outhaul, which I've hardly ever bothered with before! My wife and I made a set of "stack pack" style sail covers with integrated lazy jacks that allow us to drop the sails & cover them in mere minutes.
The loose foot allows these covers to fit on the booms using the track/slugs the old sail shelf used. As a system, it works perfectly.
Your suggestion of using ALADO as the roller furler system also has worked out great! You were the only sail maker I spoke with who was comfortable enough to make a new headsail for the boat without measuring the furler in place.
All others wanted to "measure" off the furler - after the furler & headstay was in place on the boat. As you know, I never had a furler on my boat, so this year I upgraded & added new sails, a furler, and a new headstay - all at the same time.
The furler installed in 1 hour on the dock - It is "stump simple" to install & works as well as any other furler I've used on other boats. The Jib was hoisted on in about 30 minutes - and everything fits & works wonderfully!!
I'll send photos if you want to use them on any "web site" updates you may have in mind!
Best regards,
Mike Aitken

Hi Wayne,
Sure, use a "laminated" copy at the boat show....In fact I was just out this Saturday under main/mizzen when it was blowing 25, gusting to 35. The boat handled very well & moved thru the water great. In fact today we were reaching in about 15 knots of wind.
We were averaging 7.2 knots thru the water & surging to 7.5. In the 3 years we have owned the boat we have never seen 7.5 knots in this kind of wind. Got to love it!
Mike

Mr. Wayne R. Gooderham,
Shoreline Sails
Toronto, Ontario

Wayne;
Season is over. Affinity is on the hard. Just thought I’d drop you a line and let you know how the sails and furling system worked out.
The first thing I’d note is that although Alado suggests that their furling system can be installed by one person, I’d strongly recommend that anyone doing it for the first time have a partner with them. I found myself running out of hands trying to hold the foils on the forestay while I was reaching for the bushings and trying to install the roller. With two people I’d say it’s a pretty simple installation that should take about an hour or so, even for the most mechanically challenged.
Once installed, the system worked flawlessly. I found myself on the lake in extremely high winds and reefing and furling the head sail was no problem. The new Tasker sails made a tremendous difference in the performance of the boat. No doubt that’s because the previous sails were so old, but the light wind performance was much better and I found that I was reefing both the main and the head sail more in heavier winds to keep the boat from becoming over-powered. It was much easier to adjust to conditions to maintain maximum speed while still keeping the boat very comfortable.
Of course, a lot of people from the club came over to check out the new sails and furling system. They were always impressed by the reinforcing of the sails at stress points, the Grampian insignia, the foam luff on the jib and the overall quality of workmanship. A lot commented on the heavy duty cast roller on the furling system and the open drum which would make clearing a fouled line easier...although I always emphasized that it had never fouled, even in strong winds. The one thing I did learn toward the end of the season was not to mention the price unless I was specifically asked. Once the price came up I could see their face drop and it was clear that they felt they’d paid far too much for the sails and furling equipment they’d bought for their boat.
When people ask where I got the sails and furling system I have no problem telling them and giving Shoreline a strong recommendation. I also mention how you took the time to personally come out to our club in the middle of winter to measure my forestay while the mast was on the rack; just to make sure our measurements would be correct.
Thanks for your help, Wayne. I’ll keep in touch and give your name and number to anyone thinking of new sails or furling.

Sincerely,
Don Davies
